Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 arrives in July with simulcast (2024)

Like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen has been a massively popular supernatural Shonen anime since the series’ first season premiered in October 2020. The series follows Yuji Itadori, an abnormally strong high school student who is enrolled as a apprentice “jujutsu sorcerer” at Tokyo Jujutsu High after becoming the unwitting host to Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful curse spirit who plots to regain his material form with the goal of conquering the human world.

Following the release of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a feature-length film set before the events of the first season and following the story of a fellow apprentice jujutsu sorcerer named Yuta Okkotsu, a second season of Jujutsu Kaisen has been announced and is currently in production. Here’s everything we know about when to expect the release of the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen season 2.

Will there be a Jujutsu Kaisen season 2?

Yes. A second season of Jujutsu Kaisen was announced in February during a post-opening stage event for Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which at that time had earned over $85.1 million since it opened on Dec. 24 in Japanese theaters.

Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami drew an illustration of Yuta Okkotsu, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and his cursed spirit companion Rika to commemorate the announcement.

What will Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 cover?

The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen will air consecutively for two “cours” (Japanese broadcast seasons, three months each), premiering in July and concluding in late December or early January.

The anime will cover the Gojo’s Past arc of the manga, which follows Satoru Gojo’s time as a second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, and the Shibuya Incident arc, which centers on the events immediately following the end of season 1. The first “cour” of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will take place in 2006, approximately 10 years prior to the present-day events of the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Yuta Okkotsu is set to appear in the anime for the first time during the second cour (“Shibuya Incident arc”) of this season, following his theatrical introduction in the 2021 anime film Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

Who will be producing Jujutsu Kaisen season 2?

Anime studio MAPPA will return to produce the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Shōta Goshozono, known for their previous work as an episode director on Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season as well as other MAPPA-produced anime as Ranking of Kings and Chainsaw Man, has been confirmed as the new series director for Jujutsu Kaisen season 2— replacing Sunghoo Park, who previously directed Jujutsu Kaisen season 1 and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

Park is currently announced to direct Ninja Kamui, an upcoming original anime co-produced by his studio E&H Production and Sola Entertainment for Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block, as well as another original anime project tentatively titled “Project Bullet/Bullet” also produced by E&H Production and slated to stream on Disney Plus in Japan.

Hiroshi Seko, who wrote the screenplay for Jujutsu Kaisen season 1 and Jujutsu Kaisen 0, will return to write the screenplay for Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. Composer Yoshimasa Terui will also return to compose the music for Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, as well as character designers Sayaka Koiso and Tadashi Hiramatsu and art director Junichi Higashi. CG animator Daisuke Ishikawa, known for their work on such as anime as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Chainsaw Man, and Weathering With You, will serve as the chief 3D animation director for Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 — replacing Kentaro Kimura and Miki Kaneda.

When does Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 release?

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will premiere on July 6, 2023. The premiere date was revealed in a preview trailer shared on the series’ official Twitter account on Friday, March 24. The trailer featured an extended look at younger versions of Satoru Gojo, the mentor of protagonist Yuji Itadori, and Suguru Geto, one of the series’ main antagonists and Gojo’s former classmate at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. The season will introduce several other supporting characters new to the anime, including Gojo and Geto’s classmate Riko Amanai and Toji Fushiguro, the father of Gojo’s future pupil Megumi Fushiguro.

The second cour of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will premiere on Aug. 31, 2023 and adapt the “Shibuya Incident” arc of the manga, taking place immediately after the events of season 1. The cour will consist of 18 episodes, which means the season will conclude on or after Dec. 28. The trailer for the arc offers an impressive (and explosive) new look at several fan-favorite returning characters as Kento Nanami Kento and Panda, as well as the core trio of Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki.

Will Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 stream on Crunchyroll or Netflix?

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will stream on Crunchyroll starting July 6. There is no word yet whether Netflix will stream the new season of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2.
